“Been waiting for you!” Blake said as he rode up on the same horse he’d taken out the last time he was here, a paint named Rosie.

“We were… um…” I tried to come up with something, anything, but he so startled me that I had a complete brain freeze.

“Sleeping?” he asked. “Wasn’t it hot in that truck?”

“I wouldn’t know. I’ve never slept in it… overnight.” I couldn’t bring myself to totally lie first thing in the morning.

“Is that a fact?” Blake asked, resting his hands on the saddle’s horn.

“Let it be, Blake,” Chad said. “Just tell us what’s going on.”

“Rocky’s been looking for you, Bailey. Said he sent you several text messages, and even called you a few times, but your phone went directly to voicemail. I assured him that you were around, and you merely took Trigger out for an early morning ride. Now Dylan’s here, and he’s looking for you as well. Seems you’re popular this morning. Said he thought you two had a training session this morning.”

“We do,” I told him.

“Where’s Charlie?” Chad asked. “Is she here, too?”

“Yeah, I drove her over about an hour ago, just like we planned last night,” Blake said.

“So, she made it back to our hotel all right this morning,” Chad stated, letting Blake in on what we’d seen last night.

“What do you mean, this morning… she… shit,” he said, pausing for a moment. “This thing just keeps getting better and better. And to think, I spent the night alone, in my room. What was I thinking?”

“That you wanted to win your events next week and not let Vegas heat get under your skin,” I told him, grabbing my phone out of my purse and heading to the back door of the horse barn. When I glanced at my text messages, Rocky had sent five, and Dylan three. I’d already disappointed them, and it wasn’t even noon yet.

“Is that what’s going on? It’s the heat?” Blake asked.

“Along with a few other factors,” Chad added. “But we won’t get into that right now. Let’s just all try to be adults about this.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I said and made my way into the barn.

Fifteen minutes later, I’d saddled up Trigger and walked him out of the barn with Chad walking another of our horses, a chestnut-colored quarter horse, alongside me. Already I felt tired, and my day hadn’t even begun. If I kept up this pace, not only would Chad have a better score than me next week, but I probably would ruin my chances to qualify for nationals. I needed four wins in Class 6 to win nationals. So far, I had one under my belt. If I didn’t get this second qualified win in my division next week, I could kiss away my chances of taking it all at nationals this year, a situation I didn’t want to be in.

“There she is,” Rocky said, as he stood next to the open arena talking to Dylan and Charlie. “I was wondering when you were gonna show up.
